Thiazide-type diuretics less likely to cause cardiovascular outcomes in diabetes... - http://www.foodconsumer.org/newsite/Non-food/Drug/thiazide-type_diuretics_diabetes_0912121129.html

The researchers concluded "thiazide-related incident diabetes has less adverse long-term CVD (cardiovascular disease) impact than incident diabetes that develops while on other antihypertensive medications."

Thiazide-type diuretics are antihypertensive medications which increase the volume of water that you pass out from your kidneys. These drugs include bendroflumethiazide, chlortalidone, cyclopenthiazide, indapamide, metolazone, and xipamide.

Sunshine vitamin D found to speed tuberculosis recovery -http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/04/us-tuberculosis-vitamin-d-idUSBRE8820KD20120904

(Reuters) - Scientists have shown how and why the "sunshine" vitamin D can speed recovery in tuberculosis (TB) patients, helping explain why the so-called heliotherapy of a bygone, pre-antibiotic era may have done some good.

From the late 1800s - well before the development of antibiotics in 1930s - TB patients were often sent to retreats where they were encouraged to soak up the sun's rays in what was known as heliotherapy or phototherapy.

(Reuters) - Scientists have found an alarming number of cases of the lung disease tuberculosis in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America that are resistant to up to four powerful antibiotic drugs.

MDR-TB is resistant to at least two first-line drugs — isoniazid and rifampicin - while XDR-TB is resistant to those two drugs as well as a powerful antibiotic type called a fluoroquinolone and a second-line injectable antibiotic.

Vitamin D supplements may not improve heart health -http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/31/us-vitamin-d-supplements-heart-idUSBRE87U16W20120831

The women's cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar was no lower after a year of taking one of two doses of vitamin D, compared to those who took vitamin-free placebo pills.

Still, some researchers believe taking extra vitamin D - especially for people who have very low levels to begin with - may help prevent body-wide inflammation and play a role in regulating blood sugar levels.

EU advises all girls need cervical cancer vaccines -http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/04/us-cancer-cervical-hpv-vaccines-idUSBRE88317O20120904

(Reuters) - All girls in Europe should be immunized against the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer and current vaccine coverage rates are far too low, European Union health officials said on Wednesday.

The ECDC said that in 2010, only Portugal and Britain had vaccination coverage rates above 80 percent for the target groups of girls aged between about 10 and 14 years.

While recent studies have also shown that HPV shots can also help protect boys from various types of cancer - including oral, anal and penile cancers - the ECDC said its recommendations did not as yet seek to include young men in vaccination programs.

"The personal benefit of the vaccine for men in terms of cancer prevention is very low," it said in a statement. "Including boys in the current HPV vaccination programs is unlikely to be cost-effective."

Researchers found that cranberry juice made with high concentrations of proanthocyanidins (PACs) cut kids' risk of repeat urinary tract infections by two-thirds, versus a comparison juice.

PACs are the compounds thought to give cranberries their bacteria-fighting potential. Women have long turned to cranberry juice and supplements to help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Cranberry tablets are the other option. But no one knows the exact dose needed to prevent any one child's UTIs. Right now, it's basically a matter of following the product's labeling,

For heart health, omega-3 pills are not the answer -http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/11/us-heart-omega-idUSBRE88A1C020120911

Greek researchers today released the latest study to find the substances won't help you dodge heart disease - whether you get them from supplements or your diet.

Earlier this year, a group of Korean researchers found that omega-3 supplements had no effect on heart disease or death based on 20,000 participants in previous trials.

People who eat fish often may be replacing things like steak, hamburgers or quiche, making for a healthier diet overall.

Instead of taking supplements, Lichtenstein recommended helping your heart by eating fish at least twice a week, having a diet rich in whole grains and vegetables, getting lots of physical activity and not smoking.
