Uric acid and Heart Disease

Life coach: How can I treat gout?  - Telegraph -
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthadvice/lifecoach/9327250/Life-coach-How-can-I-treat-gout.html

I have been diagnosed as a gout sufferer. I have been researching it on the internet, and everybody has different advice when it comes to the best foods to eat and avoid. I have seen everything mentioned, from cherry juice to fish-only diets. What has been scientifically proven?

A quite useless article followed by several unmoderated comments that are misleading to the point of being dangerous. Whatever else it might be, it is not a way to treat gout, though the clue lurks there somewhere. If you have ever had a gout attack, do whatever you can to keep uric acid below 0.30mmol/L (5mg/dL). The 0.36 mentioned in the article is relevant, but gives very little margin for safety. So 0.30 is the magic number in the UK. 5mg/dL for USA.

One of the commenters denies allopurinol, not wanting to start a drug-for-life in the forties. That's similar to the young schoolboy who denies spectacles for fear of mocking classmates. I've been both those people, and both are wrong. Wear specs, and you avoid the risk of eyestrain, and injury from unseen objects. Take allopurinol, at sufficient dose to reach the safe, magic number, and you avoid the certainty of joint damage in your 50s/60s followed by a wheelchair in your 70s/80s.

BTW, KP Wellness, I'm not deliberately picking on you. Your choice of articles is great, because this publicizes the real issues that are at the heart of gout management. Please continue to bring us these gouty offerings. It means we can talk about the real issues. Pity that an authoritative UK newspaper sees fit to treat this important topic so shallowly, then closes the discussion.

What side effects are you referring to, Darryl? There's nothing mentioned here or in the original article about side effects.

The effects of not getting uric acid under control is crumbling joints, as uric acid crystals eat into tendons, cartilage, and bone. Under control, means ensuring that uric acid is safe - the magic number above.

Natural Treatment of Gout - Dr. Weil -http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART00368/Gout.html

a number of drugs and supplements can increase uric acid levels in the blood and its tendency to form irritating crystals in joints. These include salicylates (the active component of aspirin), vitamin B3 (niacin), excess vitamin C and diuretics. Others are Cyclosporine (used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs) and Levodopa for Parkinson's disease.

Foods To Avoid For Preventing Gout Attacks
Foods High in Purine
Meat products like pork, beef, lamb and organ meat like liver, brain and kidneys contain high levels of purine that can increase the uric acid level in your body and create problems with gout. Fish like scallops, mackerels, herrings, sardines etc. too must be avoided if you have gout.

Alcohol too, especially beer is high in purine and must be avoided. However, vegetable sources of purine like asparagus, beans, died peas, mushrooms etc. have not shown any significant impact on gout and can be consumed in moderation.

Fructose/Sucrose/Corn Syrup
All these which are found in candies, soft drinks, jellies, jams etc. can aggravate gout and hence best avoided.

The tubular structure carrying wastes to the urinary bladder from kidneys gets blocked due to elevated uric acid levels causing several discomforting signs and symptoms. They include abnormally low urine production, bloody urine, turbid urine, higher than normal readings of blood pressure, fluid build-up in body, exhaustion and stomach pains.

Acute or chronic renal failure can result due to elevated levels of uric acid as the excretory organs are incapable of extracting toxic matter from the body and expelling it through urination.

"The increase in gout risk applies to people who are overweight as well, It's not that there's a threshold where it goes up only if you're obese."  Based on the current findings, uric acid and other health conditions do not fully explain why overweight people have a higher gout risk.

Olive oil does your body good -http://www.foodconsumer.org/newsite/Nutrition/Food/olive_oil_0912120731.html

a diet rich in olive oil, fish, fruits, and vegetables lowered the risk of heart disease and inflammation. The reason olive oil reduces blood pressure is because of its high oleic acid content of 70-80%. Scientists at the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America suggest that consuming olive oil increases the oleic acid levels in cell membranes which reduces blood pressure.
