Curcumin & Diabetes

Curry compound may curb diabetes risk: study -

Curcumin is a compound in turmeric spice. Previous lab research has suggested it can fight inflammation and so-called oxidative damage to body cells. Those two processes are thought to feed a range of diseases, including type 2 diabetes.

"Because of its benefits and safety, we propose that curcumin extract may be used for an intervention therapy for the prediabetes population," wrote study leader Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University in Nakonnayok, Thailand.

Panel recommends against ECG tests for heart disease -

(Reuters Health) - Using electrodes to test the electrical activity of the heart is unlikely to help doctors figure out who is at risk of coronary heart disease, according to new recommendations from a government-backed panel.

"It could potentially be helpful if we had evidence that doing a test like an ECG or an exercise ECG would better classify the people who are at high risk"

"If you're feeling well and don't have heart disease and your doctor is suggesting getting a resting or a stress ECG, have a good discussion about what would be the benefits for you,"

FDA rejects expanded use of Regeneron drug for gout -

(Reuters) - Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc said U.S. regulators have denied approval for it to expand use of its Arcalyst drug to prevent gout flares, asking that the company provide more clinical data.

Known generically as rilonacept, Arcalyst is already on the market to treat a group of rare genetic auto-inflammatory diseases. It only contributes modestly to Regeneron's overall sales.

Regeneron is better known for its recently approved Eylea to treat macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Arcalyst brought in sales of $6 million in the April-June period, while Eylea's sales shot up 57 percent to $194 million.

Fiber-added foods may not stem your hunger -

In a short-term study of 22 women, researchers found no hunger-quashing effects of chocolate bars containing four different “functional fibers,” such as inulin – aka “chicory root extract” – commonly found in fiber-enriched processed foods.

Overall, the women were just as hungry come lunch time as they were on a day when they ate a low-fiber bar for breakfast. And their food intake for the rest of the day was similar as well.
