This is the first time that a combination of testosterone and a synthetic progestin called Nestorone has been tested as a gel that could be applied topically. the gel was applied in two spots -- the testosterone component on the arm and the progestin component on the abdomen. The gels were applied every day for six months.

Early study found much lower sperm counts in men who applied hormone combo to skin

Vasectomies are easy, affordable option for birth control -

When performing a vasectomy, a urologist makes one small incision — about three-eighths of an inch in length — in the scrotum. The area is numbed with instant-acting lidocaine, and patients are often given Valium to ease anxiety. Once the tubes are tied off, the sac is stitched closed.

“The vast majority of men are pleasantly surprised that it is over” so quickly, Many fear that vasectomies will cause long-term problems, but these are rare.

1 percent to 1.5 percent of patients will develop severe bruising. The risk of infection is about 3 percent, with antibiotics given to reduce that risk.

Other risks are chronic pain, such as from pressure on the epididymis, the storage tank for sperm, which happens in about one in 1,000 cases. In these cases, doctors can treat the condition by removing the epididymis or reversing the vasectomy

While male birth control drugs are still a prescription for the future, men do have a surgical option to prevent pregnancy.

Male birth control options currently being tested by researchers | abc7.com -

Researchers so far have found male birth control pills to be effective for some men and not others. Side effects can include weight gain, acne, depression and possible heart problems.

Dr. Zamip Patel, who works at a Florida hospital, says testosterone gels combined with progestin gels currently hold the most promise. Dr. Christina Wang says the gel works much like female birth control without a lot of side effects.

Finally, what about a reversible vasectomy?
A procedure called RISUG takes about 15 minutes with a doctor, is effective after about three days and last for 10 or more years. It requires a one-time injection and is reversible with a second injection. RISUG is in an advanced clinical trial in India and will be widely available in the U.S. in three years.
