Metronidazole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -

Common adverse drug reactions (≥1% of patients) associated with systemic metronidazole therapy include: nausea, diarrhea, and/or metallic taste in the mouth.

Metronidazole is listed by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. Although some of the testing methods have been questioned [citation needed], oral exposure has been shown to cause cancer in experimental animals. The relationship between exposure to metronidazole and human cancer is unclear.

Due to its potential carcinogenic properties, metronidazole is banned in the EU and the USA for veterinary use in the feed of animals and is banned for use in any food animals in the USA.

Toxic levels of metronidazole can cause symmetrical lesions in the brain in the corpus callosum and dentate nuclei. Metronidazole toxicity is rare.

Metronidazole and alcohol -

Metronidazole is believed to have the ability to block the body's breakdown of alcohol, leading to an accumulation of a substance called acetaldehyde in the bloodstream may result in a disulfiram-like reaction in some patients.. This possible reaction is dangerous because it is so unpredictable and may be extremely severe.

Also with low alcohol beers and wines, which may possibly provoke a reaction when consumed in sufficient quantities.

You should AVOID alcohol while taking metronidazole.

Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed for at least one day after completion of metronidazole therapy and for 3 days after completion of tinidazole therapy.

How is Bacterial Vaginosis Diagnosed and Treated? - Bacterial Vaginosis Article by Elizabeth Stannar... -

Symptoms such as a foul-smelling, discolored vaginal discharge and burning during urination.

Women prescribed clindamycin, which is a cream, will insert it for seven days in their vagina. This treatment can weaken latex condoms, with the effects lasting up to five days post-use.

Metronidazole is available as an oral antibiotic, taken twice daily over seven days, or a gel, inserted into the vagina for five to seven days. This treatment may cause nausea or abdominal pain. Avoiding alcohol while on metronidazole to avoid these side effects.

While clindamycin and metronidazole are popular choices for treating bacterial vaginosis, tinidazole is a third option. An oral medication, tinidazole is taken once a day.

The duration of treatment, which is two to five days, depends on the strength of the particular prescription. Like metronidazole, tinidazole may cause nausea.

Metronidazole passes through placenta and reaches the baby. If you really need the medication for your illness, your doctor will still prescribe the medication based on the risk reward ratio; meaning that he will decide whether it is more risky or not.
