Common adverse drug reactions include: hypotension, cough, hyperkalemia, headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and renal impairment.

Patients who experience this cough are often switched to angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

Renal impairment is a significant adverse effect of all ACE inhibitors, but the reason is still unknown.

ACE inhibitors may reduce GFR, a marker of renal function. To be specific, they can induce or exacerbate renal impairment in patients with renal artery stenosis. This is especially a problem if the patient is concomitantly taking an NSAID and a diuretic. When the three drugs are taken together, there is a very high risk of developing renal failure.

ACE inhibitors may cause hyperkalemia. Suppression of angiotensin II leads to a decrease in aldosterone levels. Since aldosterone is responsible for increasing the excretion of potassium, ACE inhibitors can cause retention of potassium. Some people, however, can continue to lose potassium while on an ACE inhibitor.

In pregnant women, ACE inhibitors taken during the first trimester have been reported to cause major congenital malformations, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths.

Before taking lisinopril,

tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to lisinopril, enalapril (Vasotec), benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), trandolapril (Mavik), or any other medications.

tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin (Indocin); diuretics ('water pills'); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); and potassium supplements. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart or kidney disease; diabetes; lupus; scleroderma; or angioedema, a condition that causes difficulty swallowing or breathing and painful swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs.

tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.

if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking lisinopril.
you should know that diarrhea, vomiting, not drinking enough fluids, and sweating a lot can cause a drop in blood pressure, which may cause light headedness and fainting.

Lisinopril is the lysine-analog of enalapril. Unlike other ACE inhibitors, it is not a prodrug and is excreted unchanged in the urine. In cases of overdosage, it can be removed from circulation by dialysis.

Lisinopril causes the kidneys to retain potassium, which may lead to hyperkalemia. From a study of more than 1,000 patients who have hyperkalemia when using it, the condition may happen more on older male users.

Most docs are just not up on what a normal BP is. Basically, you have to treat down to 125/75 and hit both numbers, because 135/85 double the risk of MI and stroke. 155/95 is 4x, 175/105 is 8x, and so on. 140/90 is not OK. There's also the risk of kidney damage. The top, systolic, number is the risk of big heart attacks and stroke, and the bottom, diastolic, number is the risk of little heart lining MIs that can still give sudden death. Oops. Diuretics like HCTZ have the biggest reductions in MI and stroke, followed by ACEI [lisinopril], ARB [losartan] and ß blockers [atenolol; CCBs and new branded meds not so much.

urinating less than usual or not at all;
swelling, rapid weight gain;
fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
tired feeling, muscle weakness, and pounding or uneven heartbeats;

Saw my doc again today about my high blood pressure. It's not coming down fast enough for her liking so I'm on lisinopril as well as amlodipine now. I've taken lisinopril and I hate it so much. I'm one of the people who gets the nonproductive cough as a side effect. Plus it makes me pee. Both are supremely annoying. I intend to get off the stuff as soon as humanly possible.

After I left the hospital, I was thinking I really wanted a breakfast scramble of some variety. But alas, any such food acquired at a fast food restaurant will fucking kill you, as will the frozen ones in the grocery store. Solution: buy fresh eggs and veggies and make my own. The only thing in it with any sodium is the mushrooms, and those are, I dunno, like 60 mg in the whole package.

Oddly enough, my body is starting to tell me that it doesn't like high-salt, fatty foods anymore. Thinking about an Arby's sandwich kind of turns me off now. I guess that's what happens when you realize it's literally killing you.

Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, is structually similar to enalaprilat, the active metabolite of enalapril; it contains a lysine group substituted for the alanine constituent of enalaprilat. Unlike enalapril, lisinopril lacks the ester component that is hydrolyzed from enalapril and as such, lisinopril does not require in vivo activation. Lisinopril competes with angiotensin I for binding to ACE and effectively inhibits the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II.

The resulting decrease in angiotensin II concentration confers blood pressure lowering effects to lisinopril. Increased levels of bradykinin resulting from inhibition of its breakdown may also contribute to the effects of lisinopril.

Lisinopril may be used to treat hypertension, congestive heart failure and renal nephropathy.

Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while you are taking lisinopril. Drink plenty of water each day while you are taking this medication.

Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of lisinopril. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking lisinopril. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.

Lisinopril side effects have been linked to liver damage and failure.
who were prescribed lisinopril combined with hydrochlorothiazide (water pill) seem to experience more side effects than others.

Lisinopril contains a black box warning which states that ACE inhibitor drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin (RAS) system (a hormone system that regulates blood pressure and water) can cause injury and even death to a developing fetus when used during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

Signs of such liver damage include:
Dark urine
Fatigue
Jaundice
Nausea
Stomach/abdominal pain
