Vitamin D protects against colds, flu and viral infections

Vitamin D is an essential cofactor in the prevention of a host of conditions ranging from cancer to diabetes, dementia and cardiovascular disease. The sunshine vitamin is a critical part of our evolution as it has been circulating in our ancestral blood for countless generations due to plentiful sun exposure.

Scientists have found that insufficient levels of vitamin D are related to a deficiency in our innate immune defenses that protect us from infections, neoplasias, or autoimmune diseases, and can effectively shield us from the common cold and influenza during winter months.

B vitamins lower homocysteine levels and provide significant stroke risk reduction

Participants took high or low-dose B vitamins, specifically folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 for a period of two years. Those taking high doses of the B vitamins lowered the occurrence of a second stroke by twenty percent. It's important to note that the results from both studies required optimal doses of B vitamins from a broad range supplement to dramatically lower stroke risk.

Why Drinking Too Much Water Can Be Harmful To Your Health

Whenever you disregard your sense of thirst and strive to ingest several glasses of water a day just because you have been told that doing so is good for your health, you actually put unnecessary strain on your body in two major ways...

Ingesting more water than you need can increase your total blood volume.  puts unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels.

Your kidneys must work overtime to filter excess water out of your circulatory system.

In one type of cancer, heavier men may live longer
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Extra pounds may not be good for your health in general, but heavy men appear more likely to survive a particular form of immune system cancer, a new study finds.

Men who were not obese, but overweight, also had a better prognosis than their normal-weight counterparts: a 27 percent lower death risk during the study period.

It's not clear exactly why heavy men with the lymphoma would survive longer.

Merck sleep drug hits most goals of pivotal trials
(Reuters) - An experimental Merck & Co insomnia drug significantly reduced the time it took patients to fall asleep and helped them stay asleep longer, according to data from a pair of pivotal late-stage studies.

Suvorexant, in a new class of medicines, proved to be significantly better than placebo, meeting all but one of the goals in one of the two Phase III trials with about 1,000 patients in each.

Based on the data from these and other trials, Merck said it expects to file for approval of the drug later this year.

Seaweed supplement may aid weight loss: study
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A seaweed-based fiber supplement, taken daily before meals, helped people lose weight in a new study.

The supplement is based on the seaweed extract alginate, a thickening agent and a common ingredient in foods like soups and jellies. It's also increasingly used by the weight-loss industry, marketed as an appetite suppressant.

According to the researchers, the higher sodium content of the alginate drink -- a little over one gram per dose, or about half a teaspoon of salt -- could have offset any potential blood-pressure reducing effect of the supplement.

Questions remain about the safety of the fiber supplement over the long term. Five people taking the fiber gel left the study due to problems with stomach bloating, nausea and diarrhea.

Most concerns revolve around Pradaxa, a twice daily pill from Boehringer Ingelheim that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in October 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation. It was the first new oral treatment for that use since warfarin was introduced in the 1950s.

Xarelto, a once daily pill that Johnson & Johnson developed with Bayer AG, was approved last November for atrial fibrillation. The condition affects about 3 million Americans, causing blood to pool in a storage chamber of the heart, where it can clot and travel to the brain.

There’s a good reason PSA testing has saved many lives: It often catches cancer early. There has been a 40% decrease in prostate cancer deaths since the 1990s, when the PSA was first used, and a 75% decline in the diagnosis being made after prostate cancer is already advanced.

Anyone who is suffering from bone pain and chemical castration from advanced prostate cancer can tell you they wish the diagnosis were made earlier.

USPSTF Questions Benefit of Vitamin D and Calcium Supplements for Older Women

the risk for heart attacks and strokes is twice as high among users of combined estrogen-progestin versions.

"The first point to take home is that [clotting] complications increase dramatically with increasing age,"  "A doubled risk for thrombotic stroke is not very serious when you are 20 years old, because your risk at baseline is very low. On the other hand, when you are 35 years old or older, the risk is no longer that low, and you should be more careful with choosing those products with the lowest risk of thrombotic complications."
